Cinnamon the cat could offer hope to the blind

One of more than a dozen mammals from the African elephant to the guinea pig, Cinnamon’s genome will provide a benchmark to help make sense of the human genome and human disease. Prof Narfstrom uses her Abyssinians to study the genetics of retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary disease that causes blindness in cats and in 1 in every 3500 people.

Hazina the hippo dies after transfer to Calgary Zoo

Nonetheless, the animal shipping company is convinced that it did it’s best to take care of the animal during the shipping process.

Doug Whiteside, the zoo’s veterinarian, said Hazina had been lying in one position in the crate for too long, which damaged her leg muscles, leading to a release of toxins into the bloodstream.
