Pink poodles – pretty and legal

March 15, 2008

Poodles may be pretty in pink in Macon, but color comes at a cost in Colorado.

A Boulder woman who dyed her miniature poodle pink faces a $1,000 fine – an action that might make Macon’s famed pink poodle start seeing red.

“There’s silly laws on the books all over the country, and they’re made up for no reason by people who don’t have enough background,” said Paul Williams, a groomer who owns Lacie, the unofficial mascot of the Cherry Blossom Festival.

A Boulder city law – originally written to protect chicks and bunnies at Easter time – has prohibited dyeing animals since the 1980s, said Lisa Pederson, chief executive officer of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley and the city’s Animal Control and Care. The city currently is reviewing the relevance of the law, she said.

No such prohibition exists in Macon.

“We never had anybody fuss about dyeing the poodle pink,” said Paula Fuller with Macon Animal Control.
